PART 3 - 5 OF '' WHY PERFORMING MUSIC ARTISTES IN NIGERIA DO NOT HAVE LASTING CAREERS''

PART 3-5 Edition of Why performing music artistes in Nigeria don’t have lasting careers

3) Performing music artistes in nigeria don’t have a good management team. Did I hear you say it’s too costly to pay or maintain? then you are maybe missing the point. getting a good management requires two things;
Firstly, you the artiste must have a well defined brand image that is ‘’sellable’’. We humans are living magnets and if you have a clear mental image of who you are and where you’re headed you’ll probably attract the right kind of resource people along the industry value-chain.
Secondly, both parties must have shared values, goals and objectives on the business. People won’t follow you when they don’t know where you are going.
Basically a management team consists of an artiste manager, pr manager, brand specialist, hr manager, booking agent, attorney, road / band manager. Some of the management team could be engaged as consultants such as the attorney, brand specialist and booking agent. All of these stakeholders create a value-chain that shapes the artistes career in terms of business decisions, career progression, brand image, promotional strategies and every aspect that ensures the longevity of an artiste’s career.
4) Most performing music artistes in Nigeria don’t like to work with songwriters. Although recently there’s been a little improvement on these subject we are still lacking as we don’t have a royalty system or copyright laws that protect song writers. also most of our artistes prefer to write for themselves and produce ‘’junk’’ music materials in the process. I don’t have a problem with artistes writing their songs but I don’t understand why music acts would hide under beats and freestyle phrases and call that a written song.
It’s so ironic that I heard one mainstream artiste in Nigeria once say he doesn’t believe in song writing, the same artiste today is struggling with his career. Now lets do a check of artistes that have been influential in the past ten years till date and you’ll see that 90% or more of them are good song writters; Tuface idibia, p square, darey art alade, cobhams asuquo, sammie okposo, asa, 9ice, paul play dairo and many others.
To make these creative venture viable, bodies like CAC, COSON, PMAN, and so on should push for compliance and adherence to laws that protect creative people in the music industry like songwriters, producers, engineers and so on.
5) Finally, most performing music artistes in nigeria are in music for the fame and not for the love of the art.
The power of love is so strong that it cuts across and penetrates all forms of diversity and class stratas of the society. In fact, love is the strongest force in the universe and if you have that force and passion in you for what your art then you are bound to last in the scene. at our music academy, (Adlibz) our vision is to project music as a ‘’life lasting sound’’ and to represent a time-less art like music you need to have the skills, and learn the tenets so u can have a time-less career.
Take a look at great music performers and icons like Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Stevie wonder and co and you’ll notice they always perform with a smile on their faces and you can see the ‘’inside-out smile’’ that makes them glow. that shows they really love what they do and were created for it.
Sadly lots of musicians in nigeria are in it for the fame but they fail to realize that both fame and money can be seasonal but the connection you have with your craft would last you a life time. Simply put, focus on loving what you do and eventually it’ll make you the focus of humanity.
