HERE ARE 5 REASONS WHY PERFORMING MUSIC ARTISTES DONT LAST
This is an Interesting topic cos it addresses the
key issues in the music industry in Nigeria. But first we have to admit there’s
a problem; everyone knows that the average
career length of most performing music artistes in nigeria is 3-5yrs. The question is
why? This are some of the reasons we came up with based on a recent survey
conducted by our team @adlibz.
1)Performing music artistes in nigeria neglect something very important, that is having
a good musical training background. did I hear u say this is not necessary to ‘’blow’’
and all that stuff? have you not wondered why music performers in Nigeria that
have lasted like King sunny Ade, Ebenezer obey, sir victor uwaifo, femikuti,
lagbaja can all play musical instruments and are sound musicians and composers?
Music is a timeless art form and
those who must create timeless music materials must have a basic background on
the knowledge of the art. u can’t expect to stand the test of time as a musical
artiste if you don’t know basics like rhythm, melody, harmony, singing parts,
vocal placement, chord arrangements and so on. Also working with a voice coach
is important because it helps you improve your confidence in performances and
also projecting your vocal range and dynamics as a singing artiste so you don’t
‘’mime and chant’’ like most nigerian artistes.
2) PERFORMING MUSIC ARTISTES in Nigeria do not
often value the importance of having a career process. A lot of young artistes
in Nigeria just want to ‘’blow up’’ like a bomb, without even considering there
are millions of artistes out there and if Nigeria is a country of 170million
people, u need to ask yourself, who are my target audience, what are my unique
persuasive branding strategies to get me to them? How can I create a career track
record?
Young acts in Nigeria should take advantage of
promotional outlets like making cameo appearances in movies, TV / talk shows, theater plays, music videos and more. In the USA for example artistes like Mariah Carey, brandy, neyo, backed
up, wrote, co-wrote and produced songs for more established acts in their
genres of music. This helped in promoting their sound and gave them a good
career background.
